Apparent Transition Behavior of Widely-Used Turbulence Models

چکیده

The Spalart-Allmaras and the Menter SST k-ω turbulence models are shown to have the undesirable characteristic that, for fully turbulent computations, a transition region can occur whose extent varies with grid density. Extremely fine two-dimensional grids over the front portion of an airfoil are used to demonstrate the effect. As the grid density is increased, the laminar region near the nose becomes larger. In the Spalart-Allmaras model this behavior is due to convergence to a laminar-behavior fixed point that occurs in practice when freestream turbulence is below some threshold. It is the result of a feature purposefully added to the original model in conjunction with a special trip function. This degenerate fixed point can also cause non-uniqueness regarding where transition initiates on a given grid. Consistent fully turbulent results can easily be achieved by either using a higher freestream turbulence level or by making a simple change to one of the model constants. Two-equation k-ω models, including the SST model, exhibit strong sensitivity to numerical resolution near the area where turbulence initiates. Thus, inconsistent apparent transition behavior with grid refinement in this case does not appear to stem from the presence of a degenerate fixed point. Rather, it is a fundamental property of the k-ω model itself, and is not easily remedied.

Modeling transition to turbulence in eccentric stenotic flows.

Mean flow predictions obtained from a host of turbulence models were found to be in poor agreement with recent direct numerical simulation results for turbulent flow distal to an idealized eccentric stenosis. Many of the widely used turbulence models, including a large eddy simulation model, were unable to accurately capture the poststenotic transition to turbulence. The results suggest that ef...

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Bottom Outlet Hydraulic Model

Using experimental models along with conducting numerical analysis have been widely used in performance recognition and optimization of hydraulic equipments. Numerical modeling has lower cost rather than experimental one; however practical tests are commonly used because of the hydraulic structure importance especially in dams. Meanwhile numerical methods could be used for future designs throug...

کاربرد مدل های k-? خطی و غیر خطی در پیش بینی جریان و انتقال حرارت جا به جائی در کانال های با موانع منفصل

Roughness elements or turbulence promoters have been widely used to enhance heat transfer in cooling passages of modern gas turbine blades. Although such ribs substantially enhance heat transfer, the heat transfer coefficient is reduced immediately at corner downstream of each rib, creating hot spots. To remove such hot spots some of the ribs can be detached from the channel walls. In this pape...

Transition to Turbulence in Coupled Maps on Hierarchical Lattices

General hierarchical lattices of coupled maps are considered as dynamical systems. These models may describe many processes occurring in heterogeneous media with tree-like structures. The transition to turbulence via spatiotemporal intermittency is investigated for these geometries. Critical exponents associated to the onset of turbulence are calculated as functions of the parameters of the sys...

Numerical Predictions of Turbulent Mixed Convection Heat Transfer to Supercritical Fluids Using Various Low Reynolds Number k-e Turbulence Models

There are a number of systems in which supercritical cryogenic fluids are used as coolants or propellant fluids. In some modern military aircraft, the fuel is pressurized above its critical point and used as a coolant to remove heat from the aircraft engine. Accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficients to turbulent flows of supercritical fluids is essential in design of such systems. One o...
